If you're like a lot of musicians out there, one problem you may have that's holding you back, is that you underestimate the importance of promotion in what you're doing. Now you very well may produce fantastic creative product but your problem may be that you just don't fully understand what it takes to get as many people as possible listening to it. You may even think, like a lot of musicians do, that the public will find them.

What you have to understand is that there is music and there's business, and you can do music without doing business. Or you can do business and not the music but if you want to make money doing music you're going to have to do music, and business both together. You see, to accomplish your long-term goals something is going to have to bring in money to pay the bills. If it isn't music that's going to bring in the money then you're going to have to get a regular job.

So for sure a good place to start is on the Internet, and although it would help, you don't necessarily have to get a website up any more. This because there's just so many venues now that are ripe for promoting online, that if approached correctly can deliver good numbers. Take social working sites for instance. There's a whole lot of them out there for you to take advantage of, and then another thing to think about, is online radio stations.

At the same time though with so many people focusing on the Internet, what many of them have failed to take into account is all that a local fan base can do for them. You see long before there was the Internet, this is where up in the coming musicians would start out. Cultivating a local fan base. Local fans tend to be loyal and enthusiastic. They'll actually buy your CDs and merchandising material, share it with their friends, and there's also some that work for you for free to help you promote.

A great place to start promoting locally is at schools, and remember this. That is that while high school students don't have money to spend right now but they have a reputation for becoming fanatical fans. Also given a few more years they will have money to spend. Then your local community college is also a great place to promote but before you approach either one of these schools, check with the administration's office to see what their policies are.

Finally another proven guerrilla marketing tactic for selling CDs and merchandise for real money, is to keep track of when big-name acts are playing in your city or city near you by. The lines of music fans waiting to get in can stretch for blocks, and they're all fair game for selling your CDs and merchandise once they're on the public sidewalks. The nice thing here too is that all of them came with money to spend on music, so they're ready to buy.
