The chronograph watches have gained popularity among sportsmen because of the stop watch functionality which is available in these watches. This function actually helps the sportsmen to keep a watch of the time elapsed in any given sport. Apart from this, those sporting events where individual timing is the key to success, these watches have become indispensible because of the ability of the watches to keep time more efficiently. The main thing that will frighten someone shopping for a chronograph timepiece is that there will be a number of sub dials and buttons. These are present for different functions and they are in reality very simple to use. Though the functions are really complex the good thing is that people do not have to see inside a watch to understand the complex mechanisms. They can simply do away with small buttons.

For starting the stop watch functions people will simply have to press the button which is placed at the side of the main dial and positioned at two o' clock. The will start the stop watch and in order to stop it, the button needs to e pressed again. The huge seconds hand actually makes the stop watch counting by making a complete round of 60 seconds. This function can be used during racing events during the extra time play of any sport and more. There will be a reset button to bring back the seconds hand in the position zero (12 o' clock position).

People can actually find a number of smaller dials in the main dial. There will be one small dial where there will be small seconds hand. That hand is never disturbed by any function of the watch. This seconds hand is actually the big seconds hand that can be found in general analogue watches.

The next sub dial will be that of a minute counter. When the large chronograph hand makes one complete round and reaches the zero position, the hand in the minute sub dial will make one mark move. This minutes sub dial is actually used to record sporting events ranging between one minute to thirty minutes.

There may be sub dials for showing 3 hour or 12 hour calibrations. This is generally used for calculating or recording flight timings. Only when the chronograph hand circles for 60 times, the hour hand will move one mark showing one hour coverage.
