It goes on every day on a regularly basis across Canada, the US, and the UK. Home and business owners who grow weary of paying insurance premiums when it seems as though it's money down the drain. Uneventful decades often go by without so much as a shingle being blown off the roof. So they do the math and then decided that they can save some money by canceling their insurance policy, and basically going in the dark. Uninsured. Then it happens. A disaster hits, and takes away everything they've worked their whole lives for.

What you have to understand here, is that statistically speaking, the home that you live in is by far the largest investment you'll make over the course your lifetime. Even so, there's no denying the fact that steadily rising insurance premiums have left a lot of folks, and you're probably one of them, searching for innovative ways to bring them down. Without increasing the risk to their home and family of course. So what can you do? The answer here, is that there's several things that you can do to cut your costs, and lesson your risk.

Take the roof on your home as a fine example. Now it eventually does have to be replaced, so if a project like that is in your future plans there's something that you need to know before you decide on what type of roofing system to go with. That is that your home insurance carrier will give you a discount if you go with a system that's more resistant to fire. Materials like metal sheeting, or concrete or ceramic tiles which are all completely fireproof.

Then installing smoke alarms if you don't have them is also another proven "insurance cost cutter". Smoke detectors can also save lives in the event of a fire, so it's just common sense to install them along with a "carbon monoxide" early warning system. Your policy holder will give you a discount for both , yet you can do even better than that. This is because there are now complete home security systems that include smoke, and carbon monoxide detectors that you can connect up to a local security service.

Then this may come as a bit of a surprise to you because it does for most people but you can even reap a discount by starting up and becoming involved with a "neighborhood watch" group in your community. Now the nice thing about this option, is that it "costs you practically nothing" and it will cut your insurance premiums. At the same time though, before you start talking to your neighbors about it you need to talk to your provider to find out precisely what they require in order to qualify for a discount. Regular meetings, written reports, signs, etc.

Then finally you need to go over your policy carefully to find out what your deductible is on it. An insurance deductible is a fee that the policyholder pays when ever they file a claim. So of course the higher the deductible is, the less likely the policyholder is to file a smaller claim. So conversely of that, the smaller the deductible is, the more likely you are to file a claim. So it only stands to reason that home insurance carriers do grant premium discounts on policies that have smaller deductibles.
