Talented artists sometimes find that graphic design programs provide the right degree of creativity and predictability to fit their lives. Though most graphic designers work independently with a single client to develop digital art for a given project, others work for design firms.

Although many people associate graphic design with the Internet, it actually dates back to a time even before computers. For the most part, what these professionals do is create a visual solution to a marketing problem. The artists form pictures that can be used to promote one thing or another. At times, the images are more valuable to the campaign than the written words paired with it.

Graphic artists today do more than just marketing; they work in the computer technology field, develop video games, and dabble in movie production. The number of people actively pursuing this type of work is great, but the number of customers looking for good artists is also relatively high and will most likely continue to grow as we develop into an ever more visual society.

The advantages to taking on a job in this field are many. Many in this field are self-employed as independent contractors and even those who work for agencies are often given a chance to complete most, if not all, of their work from the comfort of their own home office. This makes it a perfect job for parents, who wish to spend as much time as possible with their families. Though deadlines and difficult clients can add on a good amount of stress, the overall levels of job-related stress are pretty low.

When it comes to educational backgrounds, most individuals who hope to pursue a job in this industry should acquire at least a bachelor's degree. Most colleges today, both big and small, advertise this field of study as a degree option. There are also other ways of developing experience, typically in anticipation of eventually receiving a higher degree, such as those offered through trade schools.

Anyone who possesses artistic ability but hopes to maintain a relatively stable form of employment should consider participating in one of the many open graphic design programs as a possible option, as it seems to offer the best of both worlds. Those first starting out in this industry will typically find themselves making moderate earnings, but over time income generally grows. Jobs will likely develop indefinitely as more companies look to technology and visual marketing to grow their business.
