On March 3rd 2011, former 58th Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich announced he will be forming an exploratory committee in an effort to run for president in 2012. He is one of the first well-known republican candidates to make this bid. His announcement was short at the Atlanta, Georgia State capital on Thursday afternoon stating he is looking carefully at this decision and we will expect the official statement probably later this week. Gingrich has a easily identifiable name in American politics and is regarded highly for his intelligence and ability to deliver powerful messages in his speeches. Ed Rodgers, a republican strategist, argued on NPR last week that Gingrich will have a better start than other republican candidates due to the fact he already has followers across the country. Furthermore, he stated Newt will have campaign donors already in place due to his familiarity with conservative groups throughout America.
Nevertheless, Newt's bid for the president is controversial among some of his loyal fans due to a couple ugly divorces in his past. The former Speaker is on his third marriage and this usually doesn't sit well with more socially conservative republicans. While giving a speech at the University of Pennsylvania Gingrich took ownership of his past faults and said he believes that God forgives. Additionally Newt said he could not be an effective president if America's focus is primarily on the past, yet if America's concern is on the future then he is ready and willing to implement effective policies.
In his campaign Newt will be expected to address his core beliefs concerning the national budget, deficit and economy issues. Newt has stated that America is spending way too much and in an effort to fix our spending we should cut entitlement programs such as Medicare, Medicaid, and social security. He has stated he would like to end bureaucracies and replace them with business minded organizations for financial efficiency. To tackle the deficit Mr. Gingrich would like to cut taxes across the board both for citizens and business. He has called for major reform to the tax code that makes it simple, understandable and less bureaucratic.
In 2009 the former Speaker changed from being a Baptist to a Catholic to match his wife's christian faith. Newt holds values that do reflect the tenure of common social conservatives in America. He believes homosexuality is wrong and that gays should not be able to adopt children or legally marry in a church. He thinks abortion should be illegal and that we should fire supreme court justices that dictate law in a manner that goes against the constitution's original meaning. He opposes government restrictions on gun ownership and believes that the government should be less involved in people's lives.
Currently in the public opinion polls of favorable republican candidates Newt Gingrich is trailing Mike Huckabee, Mitt Romney, and Sarah Palin. However he is one of the first major players in the republican field to form an exploratory committee and it is expected that his numbers will rise upon official announcement of candidacy for the 2012 election.
