Temporary agencies are a great place to start with part time careers - they are easier to get initial work, and give you experience and networking ability in the work world.
When you're starting in this new venture, here's some quick tips that can help you:
- Be Ready at Peak Vacation Times
Temporary agencies are always short of people for vacation times - holidays, easter, spring breaks - being available at these times means that you'll have a temp agency's full attention when everyone else is looking for work.
- Look for Careers You'll Like
Many people spend their lives in jobs they hate. While the right "psychological" frame of mind can mean that you'll enjoy even highly mundane types of work, it will help in the long run if both your employer and yourself enjoy your tasks.
- Accept that you start at the bottom
You can't start at the top, and temp agencies will often give you quick assignments that have been hard to fill. The company rarely makes any real profit off these accounts, they just use them to test out new employees. If you make it past these initial jobs, the agency will be happy with what you've done and reward you for your success.
If you're successful in short term jobs, you'll be rewarded with bigger tasks that pay more. Once a regular process takes place, you can sometimes return to the same job year after year.
- ALWAYS make a good impression
You never know when a temporary job can turn into a full time one. If you arrive early and are polite you'll go a lot further at your new company.
Stay away from personal tasks, or fiddling on the computer. When you present yourself, or ask about something new, make sure you get proper instructions to do the task as best as possible.
- Use the position as a springboard
Temporary agencies have connections with large companies, all of which can potentially be a longer term career.
If you focus on asking people what the do for their work, or what types of work they do, then this can help you in understanding the corporation.
- Prepare an "Intro Speech"
When you're new on the job, people are always interested in what you want to do with your life. If you give people a hand in understanding what you're preparing for with a 15 second sample of your goals, it will help you get ahead with your networking.
This doesn't always have to be focused on what the employer does (although it helps) - but it's good to have it rehearsed.
A full occupation can be had if you have fun with your part time careers!
