The Canary Islands are often associated with black sanded beaches because they are volcanic. Lanzarote, however, though it has seen fairly recent volcanic eruptions, has only a few beaches with black sand. It is home to over 90 beaches, and the vast majority of these have shimmering gold or white sands. But out of so many beaches, which ones are the nicest? That is a highly subjective question and one that is dependent on what it is you are looking for in a beach.
The infamous blue flag beaches of the island are seen in the hugely popular tourist destinations of Costa Teguise, Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca. Because of their blue flag status these beaches are all clean, well maintained, and have many facilities such as toilets and sun shades. You can find a wide variety of watersports on these islands too, such as banana boats and parasailing.
These beautiful and bustling beaches, however, are found in the most touristy areas, and as such can get extremely busy, which will no doubt disappoint those looking for the tropical, solitary, desert island type scenario from their beaches. For those people, heading to the less popular areas of the island is necessary, for there they will find some of Lanzarote's incredible wild beaches.
There is a consensus among locals that the most beautiful beaches on the island are those of Papagayo and Famara. Papagayo is an incredible collection of coves, and Famara is a 9 kilometre stretch of sand. Papagayo is the preferred destination for those who like to bask in the sun, because it has a key position on the southern tip of the island. Anyone into surfing or walking, or other outdoor activities should head to the windy Famara.
Despite that, people may still be adamant that they want to see a black sanded beach, for which the Canaries are so famous; and Lanzarote does have a few of these to show. In El Golfo, which is where the infamous Green Lagoon is, there are two such beaches, one of which is just in front of the lagoon, and the other is just in front of the village where you can eat at a local fish restaurant after your day on the black sands.
