Tenerife is the biggest in terms of area, and in terms of population, of the Canary Islands, and is also the centre of tourist for the volcanic archipelago. The sunny island also attracts many people to live too, and in fact this has been the main explanation for the rise in the population of Tenerife. In the period between 2006 and 2008, the population grew by 18% to an impressive 1,005,936 people (according to the national institute of statistics), which has been mainly put down to immigration as opposed to birth.

One of the main reasons, according to Tenerife Property Shop, for people to move is the lifestyle. Everything down to the eating habits is enviable for people in other parts of Europe. Their diet of grain, fruit and vegetables with fish, olive oil with a glass of red wine occasionally is widely known as healthier than the more greasy cuisine of places like Britain.

Even the timing of their eating is supposed to be a better way to do it. In Tenerife, and the rest of Spain, lunch is generally taken at 3pm, with dinner held off until 9pm. It is the blue skies and hot sun, however, that constitutes the main reason for many expatriates to move to Tenerife. The afternoon nap that is ingrained in their society must be extremely welcome for those Europeans that have worked all through the day in the past.

If you take a look at the forums about expats in Spain, however, you might be inclined to think it's more problematic to live there. The Canary Islands are not recession proof, unfortunately, meaning many have found it hard to get work there. But, there are also stories of healthcare issues, problems with driving licenses and tax issues facing people who chose to live in Spain.

Provided the transition is done carefully and slowly, though, these problems shouldn't arrive. There is a lot of misinformation bouncing round the internet about what expat's rights are in Spain, but provided expats talk to the right people before they go, and make sure they are going to be able to finance their new lifestyle, there should be nothing stopping people from enjoying it.
