An old fashioned idea sometimes is the best idea. Take, for instance, homemade Valentine cards. Giving a card to someone you love is wonderful, but when you make that card by hand, it's guaranteed to make a heart melt - especially Grandma and Grandpa!
Your child's homemade card may be simple, but the sentiment will make it special. Perfection is not the key here. You want your children to express themselves and create something that unique and special. So, get out the supplies and let's start making Valentine cards that are sure to put a smile on anyone's face!
Heart In Hand Valentine - This is one of the easiest and sweetest Valentine you can give to a Grandparent. There's nothing sweeter than a tiny hand expressing a lovely Valentine sentiment. You'll need two colors of construction paper (red and pink being traditional), a pencil, some colored markers, safe scissors, and hobby glue.
Simply trace the outline of your child's hand with fingers spread out on one colored piece of construction paper with a pencil. Cut the hand outline out. Then, on the other color of construction paper, draw a small heart that will fit in the palm of the cut out hand outline and cut that small heart out. Now, glue the little heart in the palm of the cut out hand. Have your child write a "Happy Valentine's Day" greeting inside the heart, something classic like "I love you with all my heart" will always get Grandparents all misty eyed. If your child is too young to write, a little picture drawn on the heart would be nice.
Ribbon And Bow Valentine Heart - If your child enjoys creating with ribbon, this is a great card to make. You'll need some card stock or construction paper, scissors, a pencil, hole punch, and some thin ribbon or yarn. You can make the heart fancier if you have special scrapbooking scissors available.
Draw or trace a heart on the card stock or construction paper and cut it out. Now, have your child punch holes using the hole punch up each side of the heart, all along the edges. (Be sure there are an even number of holes so your ribbon ends up on the same side of the heart.) Then simply start at the bottom of the heart and thread your way to the top along one side and do the same up the other side, ending with two loose ribbon ends at the top of the heart. Tie these ends into a pretty bow. Your child will want to finish the decorating with some "I Love You" sentiments, and maybe some pictures, or glitter, or anything they think will make their Valentine creation special.
Valentine Card Collage - If a sparkly or lacy Valentine card isn't quite right, perhaps a collage created with pictures of favorite things and activities would be just what your little one would like to make. Dad and Grandpa may especially appreciate a card like this. You'll need to have some construction paper, scissors, glue, and catalogs or magazines that are filled with pictures that would appeal to the recipient.
Sit down with your child and page through all the magazines and catalogs and start cutting out pictures that would appeal to the Valentine card recipient. Then, fold a piece of construction paper in half to form a card. Have your child arrange the pictures so they look nice, then start gluing them in place. Your child can use markers to write in captions for the pictures and Valentine sentiments. Decorate the front and insides as much as your child wishes. Finish with a hand written Valentine greeting and signature, or scribble if the child is very young, and you've got a one-of-a-kind card for a one-of-a-kind loved one!
Your child's very own homemade Valentine card will warm anyone's heart. Spread out the construction paper, gather the glitter and glue, and start creating special Valentine cards with your little ones today! Happy Valentine's Day.
