It has become apparent that 3D laser scanners have seen a huge rise in popularity these days all over the world. They actually have provided a wide array of solutions to different industries that relied on various accurate spatial data of different environments and objects. Many of those companies are still operating and doing well since the demand for laser scanners has only increased. Only if other companies realize the useful application of laser scanner to their business, even more companies could have benefitted from it.

Ever since they have been introduced for commercial use, laser scanners have been linked with construction industries, manufacturing, and engineering. Each of these areas has shown a clear demand to capture environments or objects' spatial data. Various manufacturing and engineering companies are in need of data pertaining to environments design models as well as data for currently available products related to reverse engineering. Furthermore, many construction firms are also in need of data regarding to different structures, objects, and terrains that surround a planned building location. Moreover, 3D scanning services have also been used in other areas including preservation of historical artifacts and criminal forensics.

Mostly, the advantage of using laser scanning by the individuals and companies is the way it provides amazingly precise spatial data. This data is presented in 3 basic data models including polygon mesh models, surface models, and solid CAD models. Polygon mesh models usually cannot be edited and widely used in design conception. Surface models, on the other hand, can be edited at the surface and is typically used in modeling organic objects and determining surface coatings. Lastly, solid CAD models can be completely edited and can include design intent or a computerized CAD model can be directly created from.

The applications mentioned above by the different models could be narrow, but it is essential to note that their overall applications include distinct sub-applications that are useful in many industries. For instance, the laser scanner is being used by police departments in scanning the scene of the crime. They use it to determine the trajectory of the bullet, gather physical evidence that initially appears trivial, and draw crime scene animations using hard data, simulating how a crime could have likely happened. These applications weigh a lot in courts where evidence plays a key role in the prosecution of acquittal of an individual.

After companies and institutions see the benefits of laser scanning, they either purchase their own scanning equipment or they outsource it to companies that do 3D scan services.
