In the aftermath of Hurricane Andrew back in 1992, many of the top home insurance companies in Florida have stopped doing business there. After a series of hurricanes in 2004 and 2005, more companies have halted their operations or left the state eventually. Presently, just a small number of branded companies are operating in Florida to service their existing base policy. In the past, there are about 500 insurance companies operating in the state, but that list has dwindled to 40 companies. Many of these companies are startup firms that most folks do not even know.

With all the confusion going on in the Florida home insurance market, you need to know how you can look for the best firms among the few companies that still remain. You need to check the company's longevity since those that have been around longer have more experience and more developed systems in writing policies and processing claims.

You need to look for companies that are financially stable. Look for those that have high financial ratings, have huge surplus to pay claims, and have backup reinsurance from providers that likewise have high ratings. That company must also have some form risk diversification. The company should have a core base of policies including a healthy mix of newer and inland-based homes together with older homes located near the coastal areas.

The company's policy base needs to be distributed geographically around various counties throughout the state and not just concentrated at the coastal areas in the counties south of the state. It is also best to look for a company that has expanded its policy base reach to other states outside of Florida.

The company needs to have an outstanding reputation in terms of customer service and a good record of quick and fair claims processing. Basically, if you call the company, somebody at the end of line will be there immediately to answer your question. For example, if you are going to call regarding your bill, their representatives must have people skills and use effective systems. After a hurricane, the company must send an adjuster to your home quickly to make an assessment of the damages. Before the adjuster leaves, he should have already determined the value of your damages so that the company can send a check.

Check if the company is licensed by going to the website of the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation. If possible, find out if the company was formed prior to the hurricanes of 2004 as these companies are good choices.
